Here is what we’ll cover in this article :
Have you ever considered how much waste you throw in your trash can and where exactly it goes?
Well, most of us have heard of landfills, but what we haven’t considered is the influence it has on our ecosystem and ourselves. The harsh reality is that these units are full of hazardous material that not only contaminates the environment but potentially affects our health as well. This is a result of methane emissions, one of the biggest contributors to climate change (EPA.gov).
1. PLASTIC WRAP V.S BEESWAX WRAPS
Plastic wrap is definitely a go-to for preserving dishes and leftovers. Although these materials may be recyclable in particular places and cities. It does not help us achieve our goal of reducing our waste impact.
The alternative, Beeswax wraps. These are not only reusable and can be washed, but they preserve your food for longer than traditional plastic wrap. I have learned this from experience.
These come in many shapes and sizes and are now being sold all over, including amazon. These are affordable and prevent you from ever having to buy plastic wrap. Not only will you be reducing your plastic usage, but this material is biodegradable and compostable.
2. REUSABLE GROCERY & PRODUCE BAGS
You likely have seen these before or even have owned a couple and just forget to bring them with you. These are sold all over the internet and usually at your local supermarket and shopping centers. That being said, the recommended material would be 100% cotton as it is also compo-stable and easier to clean.
They may come in all shapes and sizes as well, and you may even get smaller bags for grains and nuts, even flour, and other refined cooking products. This is yet another material that will allow you to reduce plastic waste and is usually more reliable in regard to strength in the material.
Though there are several alternatives to our regular household items. The last I will be naming is for your
toothbrush. Most Bamboo toothbrushes are completely compo-stable (depending on which brand you purchase).
4. USE A WATER BOTTLE INSTEAD OF USING PLASTIC
This is another one we are aware of yet not all of us do it. Plastic Water bottles may also be recycled, but the recycling process takes time and energy. We want to reduce our waste and this can be done by using and refilling our own bottles.
Try to find an Eco-friendly bottle as well. Using your own bottle will save time and money in the long run, and will reduce your plastic intake by a lot.
